From continuous EEG to an averaged response.

An event-related potential (ERP) is a brain response time-locked to an event — the onset of a stimulus. A single response is buried in ongoing EEG — but averaging many time-locked epochs cancels unrelated activity and the response emerges, evaluated by its polarity, latency and amplitude. In the oddball, a rare target elicits a large P300 ~300 ms after onset. Scroll to watch it build, step by step.
